On Thursday 4th Dec members from Envirotech FM’s HQ in Birmingham spent their morning volunteering to help feed homeless people with the non-profit organisation Let’s Feed Brum.
Let’s Feed Brum (LFB) was founded in 2016 by a small group of people who wanted to make a big difference. A leading homeless charity in Birmingham, on a mission to be part of the solution to end homelessness for good. Every day volunteers connect with people who are homeless and at risk of homelessness. This has helped LFB to create a consistent and meaningful dialogue to better understand what people are in need of.
Our Envirotech FM volunteers took part in one of two weekly breakfast events held at Birmingham Cathedral. From approximately 09:30am – 12:30am a food van carrying all equipment acts as the main anchor station for hot drinks. Next to this are two gazebos set up, one providing sandwiches cold drinks and snacks, and the other providing a hot porridge and further sandwiches and essential supplies. A lot of the homeless people attending are regular attendees which was shown in the proven bond they have with the regular volunteers that 90% of the time always part of these weekly events.
The idea to volunteer and help at the LFB breakfast event was from Envirotech FMs Customer Service Desk Manager Ryan Smith, who had this to say ‘I reached out to LFB about how we can help as being local to Birmingham/West Midlands there is a vast amount of homelessness and it is quite noticeable when going around the city centre. This in my opinion, makes a real-world impact not only for those seeking food themselves but also to alleviate the strain on charities and shelters that do this on a day to day. For the team, I am hoping, this has given them an insight into the life and difficulties these people encounter which will boost a culture of looking out for other people’.
Whilst monetary donations are an absolute necessity, if you are not in the position to donate money then why not donate some of your time? Along our own employees were other company work teams, or individuals which had taken the time off work to simply come and help make a difference. Especially this time of year being a lot harder and dangerous to homeless people due to the cold weather, volunteering is equally as important as monetary donations.
It was a very wet cold day, but another successful morning. Lines to the van and the gazebos were long and lasted the duration of the morning. A mobile walkaround the train stations and bridge overpasses was also undertaken. A trolley with hot drinks, sandwiches and snacks were all gratefully received by everyone we approached, especially those who had mobility issues that may not have been able enough to walk up to the main event.
